Day 8: Meeeeeooooow!

Saturday, June 29

Good news, children! It's time for another exciting episode of...Cultural Adventures!!

Part 3: This particular lesson may or may not be necessarily classified as a cultural thing. It's mostly, well, a guy thing. But, there's something about the culture here that makes this way more prevalent and acceptable.

Today, we are talking about... Catcalling!!

"Hey. Whaddup bitch?"

"Your mom's a bitch.

"Your dog's mom's a bitch."

"Oooooooooooooo!"

But here in Morocco (and in a great deal of the Middle East, I gather, especially in Egypt), guys are constantly bothering the women. Especially the foreign women. Like who? Oh, like me. And they're not subtle. At all. It's a daily thing. In the mornings when we go out to wait for a taxi, men honk at us as they drive by, or flash their lights at us, or yell at us from their windows, etc.

"Hey you with the vagina! We should hook up!"

And every day when we leave, it's the same thing. Even groups of pre-teen boys have walked past us, saying hello in French with their sexiest, baby voices, wearing this face:

"Hey, gurl."

We knew about this particular trouble coming into the country. Generally the boys don't do anything. They just want you to be aware that their services are available if you should choose because they are totally willing to get all up on 'dat.

During orientation, the Resident Director, who is a 50 year old female, told us she still gets marriage propositions. She said the thing to do is ignore them, don't answer, wear at hat, wear sunglasses, and look confident. So that's what I try to do.

Me in Morocco

So, anyway. Enough with that lesson. On to my day!

Oh wait. Nothing happened. I literally sat around all day because it was that hot and I read out of my Kindle and updated my blog.

Btw, my Kindle is AWESOME! Thank you so much, Habiibii! I love it! It's great for traveling! And it doesn't weigh anything. And I have so many book options. I'm so happy with it.

Also, I found this helpful comic:

  1. This is one of my favorite posts so far! I got a good belly laugh that I really needed. Also, if I haven't already said so, I love your titles you have been giving your posts. You are so clever.
