Friday, July 12
Because nothing happened on Friday, apart from me going to
class, eating at McDonald's, and messing around on Adobe Illustrator for the
grander part of the day, I'm going to revisit a previous post that I made, so
that I may clarify something I said.
After re-reading it, it sounds like I was condoning
American's lack of knowledge about the world as something that is okay. I'm
not. I was simply saying that I understand why they don't have a larger
knowledge about the world, because they don't have easy access to it. But
that does not in any way, shape, or form justify their prejudices and hatreds
of people unknown to them. If anything, it makes their hatreds less logical,
because they are forming these strong views without basing their opinions on any sort of knowledge or fact.
I tend to get two kinds of reactions from people when I tell
them I'm studying Arabic: there are the people who say things like, "Oh
wow! That's great! That's so interesting. If you're going to learn a language,
that's a good one to learn. Are you going to work in Foreign Relations, or
something?" And then there are the others who, when I tell them I'm
studying Arabic, say things like, "Why? Why would anyone study that? Are
you becoming Muslim?" And then they proceed to judge me, or think less of
me. As if they had any right.
Even if people on this planet are "right" or
"wrong", it is not our place to judge them. What makes our "right" more correct than someone else's?
Essentially, every person on this earth is human, and
spending our lives hating people unjustly is just a waste of time and energy,
and can only lead to a very unhappy and negative life.
Anyway. That was random, and not nearly so extensive or
well-formulated of an argument as I would normally make, but it's late, and I
can't keep spending forever writing these blogs! If you know me, you know how I
feel anyway. So there.
And because this post was a little heavy, here's some pictures of cats!
